One night event
Los Angeles Dance Hall, Mexico City
Curated by Obstinado Tepito
November 13, 2009
Campechana & Bastarda is an art project by Ilian González within the Obstinado Tepito curatorial frame. A process of research and collaborations culminated in an event the night of November the 13th 2009 in “Salón Los Angeles”, México city.
After numerous excursions to the Tepito neighborhood and under the spell of the musical presence on the streets, C&B adopted Music as its vertebral spine. Crossbreeding and mixing were the central ideas, reflecting upon free osmosis processes as a vital source of culture.
C&B developed as a sort of cadavre exquis that involved collaborations with artists from very different sociocultural layers. Each contributed with their musical selection, own compositions, videos or choreographies within their individual field of action. The Campechana night had a sort of script that was modified and improvised at the moment, combining tropical with electronic sounds.
The list of guests for the Campechana night was an eclectic group of persons taking as a starting point the people from the Tepito neighborhood. An essential intention considering Mexico’s broken social structure was to induce the coexistence of diverse individuals, aware of the omnipresent “fear of the other” that our reality promotes.
